Steelhead on the Spey Guide Service provides guided and instructional fly-fishing trips for salmon/steelhead on California’s North Coast using two-handed (spey) rods. We fish for salmon/steelhead in the traditional down and across (swung fly) method, targeting the most aggressive fish in the river. In the summer and fall months we target steelhead on the Klamath and Trinity Rivers. In the winter months we fish the rivers of California’s North Coast for wild winter steelhead. Some of these rivers include the Smith, Eel, and Van Duzen to name a few. Whether you are a beginner or an avid steelheader, Steelhead on the Spey guide service provides you a day of fun steelheading.
Jason Hartwick is the owner and head steelhead guide for Steelhead on the Spey Guide Service. Born and raised in Sacramento, CA, where he learned to fly-fish over 20 years ago, Jason hooked his first steelhead on the nearby American River and has been crazy about steelhead ever since. Although he grew up in Sacramento, Jason spent many years chasing salmon and steelhead on California’s North Coast spending most of his time on the Trinity and Eel Rivers.
KAYAKERS: Eric Stockwell is a lifelong resident of Humboldt County who has turned his obsession for anadromous fish and their habitats into a focus for his current work as a guide and salmon surveyor. When the ocean is flat or the rivers are green you will find Eric on missions to help his clients land special catches from kayaks while at the same time receiving his thoughts on environmental consciousness, conservation, and thoughtful harvest. Much of the rest of the time, Eric is on the landscape pursuing his true passion for observing migrating and spawning adult salmon and steelhead and the features associated with them. This year, Eric is working with CalTrout to organize the Eel River / Van Duzen Restoration and Spawning Tour.
